COMPOSITION OF THE TILE ROOF WATERPROOFING SYSTEM

Concrete Roof Tile Waterproofing System

1/ ROOF RIDGE / VALLEY / FLASHING / PARAPET WALL

Inspect the roof. If the cement is cracked and bits are falling out it is time to redo the waterproofing on the ridgeline & damaged sections. Remove any loose cement, rake open cracks and replace broken tiles.

2/ FILLING - DAMPEND / FIBRECRETE

Prepare a mixture of FibreCrete. The consistency must be the same as a plaster mix. Fill all gaps & holes with FibreCrete. Smaller gaps and cracks can be treated with DampEnd. Clean away excess cement with a builder’s sponge and shape concrete to match tile levels. Allow time to dry.

3/ PRIMER – PENETRAR

Prime the entire area to be waterproofed with Penetrar. Penetrar will penetrate the porous concrete, bind any loose particles or dustiness, seal it and enhance the adhesion for the membrane to follow.

4/ MEMBRANE - STRETCHSEAL

Strengthen fixed sections, overlaps & joints and ridge line with StretchSeal membrane. The membrane will help to absorb movement and hairline cracks that may appear.

5/ MEMBRANE ADHEASION - REPELLO

Embed the StretchSeal membrane using Repello. Repello is an adhesion promoter admixture with excellent adhesion properties that will completely penetrate the membrane and bind it to the substrate.

6-8/ WATERPROOFING - HYDROSEAL HF

Apply 3 x layers of HydroSeal HF on the fixed & reinforced membrane sections before colour coating the waterproofing to match the roof tile colour. HydroSeal HF is a high-performance universal waterproofing membrane specifically developed for long term protection of all types of roof surfaces, concrete roof slabs, parapet walls, tiled roofs, valleys, ridges, vents and flashings.

HOW IT WORKS

WATERPROOFING A CONCRETE TILE ROOF

The main sections of a tile roof are not supposed to leak if the tiles have been installed correctly. The problem areas prone to leak on a tile roof is the ridges, valleys, flashings and parapet walls. The roof should be checked and ridge tiles should be inspected for displacement or cracking. The tiled roof waterproofing system from SealPro was designed to fix and seal the problem areas on a tile roof and prevent leaking. The tile roof waterproofing system is UV stable, weather-resistant, durable, long-lasting and low maintenance. See the system in action and how it will enhance your roof.

Proactive roof maintenance plays a big role in preventing extensive damage to your property. In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of a roof, ridge and hip lines need to be properly waterproofed to protect your property. When the cement is cracked and bits are falling out it is time to redo the waterproofing on the ridgeline. The roof tile waterproofing system can also be used for sealing joints, overlaps and roofing screws on corrugated roofs.

Maintain and renew your concrete tile roof with Seal Pro's roof tile waterproofing system. As with this project in Ersmuskloof in Pretoria. Roof ridges have started to crack and pieces of cement have come loose and needed to be redone and waterproofed. The complete roof tile waterproofing system was applied.

Seal Pro's concrete tile roof waterproofing system is perfect for sealing all types of concrete roofs before painting. As with this project in Moreleta Park where our client did complete roof maintenance by redoing the waterproofing on the roof ridges & valleys and then completing it with a fresh coat of roof paint.

How to waterproof roof ridges on a concrete tile roof

Inspect the ridging for degraded plaster between joints and check the positioning of the ridge tiles. Ensure that the metal valley installed under the tiles is in position, but not bent or deformed allowing water to penetrate under the tiles. Flashing will be treated the same, but most important in both cases - the tiles need to be positioned correctly. There should be no obstruction causing the buildup of water.

For the best way to waterproof a tiled roof the following steps can be applied:

  • High Pressure Wash the entire area to be treated & clean thoroughly. Allow drying.
  • Rake out lose cement and open up cracks;
  • Fill gaps and openings with FiberCreat;
  • Apply Primer (Penetrar) to strengthen cement and prepare it for the waterproofing system;
  • Strengthen fixed sections, overlaps, joints and ridgeline with StretchSeal membrane. The membrane will help to absorb movement and hairline cracks that may appear. Embed the StretchSeal membrane using Repello;
  • Apply 3 layers of HydroSeal HF on the refurbished and reinforced membrane sections before applying the final coat of colour-coded waterproof coating to match the tile colour.
Best Way To Waterproof a Tiled Rooff

The main sections of a concrete tile roof are not supposed to leak if the tiles have been installed correctly. The problem areas prone to leak on a concrete tile roof is the ridges, valleys, flashings and parapet walls.

To waterproof cement roof tiles, a waterproofing system that penetrates the cement and seals it is required. One part paint on products will in most cases not do the job and a multi-step system is required for long-lasting results.

To get started inspect the roof. If the cement is cracked and bits are falling out it is time to redo the waterproofing on the ridgeline & damaged sections.

Remove any loose cement, rake open cracks and replace broken tiles.

Fill gaps with FibreCrete or DampEnd

Reinforce repaired sections with StreatchSeal membrane and embed with Repello

Waterproof cement roof tiles

Concrete roofs tend to be porous and when it is time to perform maintenance on the concrete roof it is important to apply a waterproofing system that penetrates the concrete, seal it and enhances it for waterproofing or painting.

The best waterproofing for a concrete roof is the acrylic membrane enhanced waterproofing system from SealPro.

The system consists of the following:

Cracks and damages sections should be opened, cleaned and filled with FibreCreat. After the cement has been shaped and left to cure it should be enhanced with a penetrating primer.

The priming agent of the waterproofing system Penetrar, has extreme penetration and binding capabilities specifically in cementitious substrates. It binds dustiness, enhances the substrate and promotes adhesion.

For added strength StretchSeal should be applied with Repello over repaired and overlapping sections. This will help to absorb movement and any headline cracks to form.

The system is completed with three coats of HydroSeal HF that would completely seal repaired sections giving you a seamless watertight seal that is UV & weather resistant.

Traditionally roof ridge tiles were secured by using a cement and sand mixture on all overlapping tiles and ridge capping’s but after a few years it starts to crack and leaking might occur.

When pieces of cement start falling out it is time to reseal the affected areas.

Roof ridges should be cemented using FibreCreat. FiberCreat is an excellent product to use when doing maintenance on roof ridges, flashings & valleys.

The two-part polymer-modified fibre-enhanced cementitious slurry comprising of a liquid polymer part and cement-based fibre reinforced powder part. The product gives a solid base with great adhesion for any waterproofing or paint system to follow.

waterproofing cement tiles

Sealing concrete roof tiles is not always necessary but it would most definitely extend the lifespan of a roof. The tiles on the roof might be weather and porous but they are laid on a specific pitch by design to keep water out.

Areas that do need maintenance from time to time is the roof ridges, flashings and valleys. The rest of the roof can also be inspected for tiles that have moved or broken tiles that must be replaced.

A great product to use to seal concrete roof tiles is Penetrar. Penetrar has extreme penetration and binding capabilities specifically in cementitious substrates. It binds dustiness, enhances the substrate and promotes adhesion for waterproofing & painting systems.

Should the requirement arise for the roof to be painted or waterproofed the Penetrar coating would have prepared the concrete tiles to receive the new coatings.
