Waterproofing concrete roof slabs with Bitumin Torch-On

When the raining season starts the last thing you want is a call from one of your tenants complain about a leaking roof. When it was time to redo and waterproof the concrete roof slabs of a residential building in Pretoria, ECO Seal was called in to get the job done!

Now I have to mention that we do not recommend using Torch-On as a waterproofing solution as it is an outdated waterproofing method in our eyes. We use the products from SealExtreme that has a nano polymer base giving you a single layer waterproof coat with no overlapping or joining pieces. New waterproofing technologies  like NanoSeal gives a fare superior result as to bitumen torch-on, but if the client insists that’s what we do.

The first course of action was to remove all previous waterproofing material and to prepare the roof slabs for Torch-On application. After all the roof slabs were cleaned it was primed with Bitumin primer. Once the primer dried, 4mm Jayco Torch on was then applied. Finishing off the Torch-on waterproofing job everything was painted with silver aluminium to help protect the waterproof coating against the sun.

Here are the steps we followed to repair and waterproof the concrete roof slabs:

1. Remove old & previous waterproofing measures;
2. Prepare concrete slabs for waterproofing by priming it with Bitumin primer;
3. Apply 4mm Jayco Torch-on to seal the slabs and make it waterproof;
4. Protect Torch-On by painting it with two coats of aluminium silver.
