Painting a roof is far more advanced than just “slapping on a couple of coats of paint”, and requires extremely thorough preparation. Not only is the preparation important but the paint used on roofs must be of ultra high quality and durability compared to standard exterior painting. Your roof is in the sun for up to 14 hours per day in summer and 12 hours per day in winter. That's why roof paint must be of the highest durability.

The Process We Follow To Paint Your Concrete Tile Roof

Step 1 - Pressure clean the surface

High-pressure cleaning is a cost-effective way to prepare your roof for painting. High pressure clean the entire roof. If the roof has been painted previously, and the paint is loose or peeling, it will be necessary to strip off the old paint before priming.

Tiled Roofs: Once high pressure washed, allow to dry to a damp state or wet the surface slightly before application commences, as this would assist Penetrar to penetrate and bind the surface if this should be required.

Metal Roofs: High Pressure Wash the entire area to be treated and clean thoroughly. Scrape, sand or brush the entire area to remove all flaking and debris that could affect the adhesion of the products to be applied.

Step 2 - Repair the roof

Assess the roof from a structural point of view and inspect all ridges, valleys and flashings for defects. If damaged areas on the roof.

Tiled Roofs: Inspect the ridging for degraded plaster between joints and check the positioning of the ridge tiles. If needed waterproof the ridges and prepare for painting. Replacing broken tiles and re-position tiles correctly.

Metal Roofs: Most commonly the leaks do occur from the ridging joints or overlaps, valleys, flashings, roof sheeting overlaps and roof screws. Replace loose nails or screws, and remove rust on a metal roof. Waterproof any problematic areas and prepare for paint.

Step 3 - Prep and Prime the surface

It is advisable to prep and prime any roof to be painted. Primers will seal the substrate and assist with the increase in the spread rate. Good quality primers will also enhance the UV capability of the top coat roof paint.

Tiled Roofs: Apply Penetrar as a primer. Wet the surface slightly before applying the primer, as this would assist Penetrar to penetrate and bind the surface. Penetrar binds, enhances and consolidates surfaces preparing it for painting.

Metal Roofs: Treat all “rust” with Referro (refer speciality products) according to the specifications provided. Once treated coat all converted sections with a metal edge primer to prepare surfaces for painting.

Step 4 - Paint The Roof

We believe in using highly qualified tradespeople and only the best quality paint, suited for harsh South Africa conditions. We recommend using the roof paints from SealPro. The spread rate is directly affected by the substrate. Smooth surfaces will increase the spread rate whereas rough or textured surfaces will decrease the spread rate.

Tiled Roofs: Apply 1-2 layers of Renew. Estimated at 50-80m2 per 20Lt Final Finish.

Metal Roofs: Apply 2-3 layers of Pittura. Estimated at 50-60m2 per 20Lt Final Finish.
