This large double-storey home in Southdowns Estate needed more than a fresh coat of paint. Years of Highveld sun and summer storms had left the corrugated roof sheeting rusted and faded, while the plastered exterior walls had begun cracking and losing their weatherproof seal. The owner wanted a full exterior refresh that would actually hold up — not just look good for a season — with professional roof painting and wall waterproofing.

The problem: rusted roof sheeting and failing exterior walls

The roof sheeting had lost its factory coating in patches, exposing bare metal to rust along the ridges, valleys, and screw lines. Left untreated, rust spreads underneath the remaining paint film and eventually eats through the sheeting itself, leading to leaks. At the same time, the exterior walls were showing hairline cracks and worn sections where the original coating had failed, letting moisture track into the plaster ahead of the rainy season. The bargeboards, gutters, downpipes, patio ceilings, and even the boundary wall and garden gates all needed attention.

1. Roof prep and rust treatment – The full roof area was degreased and washed down, then rusted sections were treated with a rust-converting primer to stop corrosion before it could spread further.
2. Roof topcoating – Two full coats of a high-quality roof paint were applied over the primed sheeting, with the bargeboards, gutters, and downpipes coated to match.
3. Cladding and courtyard walls – Exposed cladding sections were sealed with a clear protective coat, and the back courtyard walls were repainted to bring the rest of the property into line.
4. Exterior wall crack repair – Cracked and damaged plaster sections on the house walls were filled and matched to the existing wall texture, and the seals around windows and doors were renewed.
5. Wall waterproofing and painting – A waterproof primer coat was applied across the prepared walls before two full coats of high-quality paint went on, sealing the walls against moisture ahead of the summer rains.
6. Finishing details – Patio chimneys were sealed, patio ceilings and rafters were repainted, laminated beams were coated, and the garden gates, front gate, and boundary wall were brought up to the same standard.
